I spend a lot of time on rivers on an inflatable SUP, goofing off with family, running whitewater, paddling upriver for exercise, doing fish surveys for work, etc. I had a 3 pc. Accent paddle for ~ 5 years that is falling apart. I'm looking to replace it with a quality lightweight paddle, like the Black Project Lava, but I wasn't sure whether there was a strong trade-off between performance and durability. I have a KeNalu I use in surf (and LOVE), want to get a 3 pc. to use for everything else. Not worried about price if it will last. Thanks for any help.
The only bit I can contribute for you is that I have several BP paddles and the blade performance is superb. Only had them a year and only use one piece paddles so those aspects I can't help with.
My wife and I have had the Ohana 3-piece paddles for about a year and are very pleased. The Ohana is only 60% carbon compared to the 90% carbon Lava that you mentioned so the Ohana is about 10% heavier, but our priority was for the paddles to survive airport baggage handlers when we travel. I believe the blades are the same on the Lava and the Ohana. We also have 90% carbon one-piece paddles for surf and downwinding on Maui, but we would never try to travel with those.
We are very impressed by the weight, blade efficiency, solid connections and very nice travel case of the Black Project paddles. Other multi-piece paddles I have used have tended to have rotation or wobble problems at the joints, and I have broken a few during hard strokes. The BPs feel rock solid.
Hi Kisutch.
I have three BP paddles. A Lava fixed, Surge fixed and a Ohana adjustable 3 piece.
All superb paddles and strong & durable.
The 3 piece performs as well as the fixed but is slightly heavier than the Lava as the Ohana is 60% carbon & has the adjustable handle.
The flex is similar to my Surge and it doesn't twist due to the hex coupling.
The Lava 3 piece would be better for sure & if you don't need the adjustable handle - go for fixed.
Also, don't hesitate to contact Chris at BP if you have any questions. He is a great guy and knows his stuff.
Thanks! I'll just reach out to BP, bout to do a 3d float, wish I'd gotten my act together and upgraded earlier!
