Anyone successful flying their board out the top of the wave. Had a few plays when conditions were right but no chance of staying on board like the youtubers.

The secret of the youtubers: they do not show failed attempts :-)

Be aware also that your own board is the main hazard while surfing. Take intro account the risk of injury if you want to try it (how do you get out of the water and to an hospital), and use safety fins. Things like busting a knee could end your SUPing days if you are not young anymore.

If you are able to use short SUPs, you could use straps. Here a 100kg guy on a 7'6" 105l

Or just learn to Wind/Kite/Wing surf ;-)

PS: I jumped a lot when Windsurfing, but after some time not anymore, the risk to myself and the gear was not worth it for me. Needless to say, I didn't attempted it when SUPing where I did not have the control of the straps + mastfoot.

Cool video, without the booms from a windsurfer it must be so hard to eject from those straps, especially wearing booties. I would try straps if I thought I could get my feet out easily.

I've done a few "hops" out the back of the wave, I found the surface area of a sup made it easier to fly up than a surfboard for some reason. I can't imagine trying to land a real air back into a wave of any size the width of the board makes it easy for the wave to flip it up so I would be scared to try even if I had the ability to begin with. It seems like the pros can use the paddle to help them launch.

It is not so hard barefoot, but you are right, some booties can get stuck more easily, especially if they have gripping soles and various asperities on the top (bumps, straps...). I was lucky to never have to use booties with straps.

Getting the straps tight enough so that only your toes emerge on the other side is critical, booties or not. The more your feet goes in the straps, the more it can get stuck.

No way on straps in a sup for me. For one, it doesn't feel in the spirit of sup surfing and 2nd the amount of leverage your board would put in you ankle when rolling in the surf. ? also windsurf and loving jumping but there you have a mast and boom to stabilise against when rolling in the surf. I'll keep just flying out with out straps. Got to land one sooner or later. But getting the right conditions is hardest part.
Memory has just reminded me about a JP use to run a single front strap on sup.
