In metropolitan Melbourne, we are allowed two hours of exercise within 5 kilometres of our home. Can this exercise include sailboarding? Surfing is allowed but I don't know about sailboarding and so far the Department of Health and Human Services has not got back to me with a definitive answer. Does anybody know for sure what the situation is?

This is what I understand but don't quote me.

You can travel up to 5 km to the place of exercise so if you are more than 5km from the beach or lake sorry you are stuffed. If you are within 5km you can Windsurf provided you take no longer than 2 hrs door to door. Also when you are Windsurfing you can travel no further than 5 km from the launching spot .
This is my understanding but I may not be correct.

My interpretation is that 'exercise' is similar to that allowed to prisoners in jail. Basically, your benevolent Premier is enforcing some form of house arrest. I have a son in Melbourne and he is very limited with his outdoor activities, including the back yard. There is no common sense so don't try to find a logical answer.

Maybe it's time for some civil disobedience.

Incorrect Mark, Kiteboarding, Windsurfing, Paddle Boarding, Wingfoiling etc are now classified as exercise and allowable with restrictions.

Really appreciate the feed back - I don't want Inspector Plod of the Victoria Water Police harassing me about my ability to go for a sailboard.

That's pretty exciting, doesn't help me as Im 7km from the beach, but does bode well for when the next round of restrictions lifts the 5km limit in October. We were previously lumped in with recreational boating. I can't believe how much good wind we have wasted in the last 6 weeks

How recent was the change? On Father's Day, the police helicopter was flying over people's homes to make sure there were no illegal activities or people outside without masks. There has been a lot of pressure placed upon some of the State Governments who had tight restrictions in place. I have a dim view of any restrictions when the AFL and NRL continue in some modified form. Sunshine and fresh air are good for you so let us hope that rational thinking emerges from this.

As of the 13th, so recent. Hopefully after the 28th they get rid of the 5km bull****.

I'd say use common sense. I remember when they were talking about closing the beaches in WA back in March unless people followed social distancing rules. While we couldn't control the average punter we did make sure our group of foilers would space out cars in the car park not sit on top of each other at the beach. Don't give them a reason to book you and be reasonable when talking to police officers. Approach them with an aggressive attitude and you will get the same in return. Make sure you have a print out of the web site with that states windsurfing / kiteboarding etc is allowed.

You are right Mr. Love. The Department of Health and Human Services just called me and a lady called Brigitte said that as of 13th September sailboarding is a permitted exercise provided it is done within 5 kilometers of your home, not done for more than 2 hours and it is your form of exercise. We are to expect more changes to restrictions on September 28th. At least the revenue hungry Gestapo at VicPol can't slap a fine on me for doing what I love.

For those, more than 5 km from the water, they can but wait for the benevolence of Dictator Dan

Who lives 5 kms from water? I may be wrong, but usually it costs a lot of money to have properties near the water. How many would actually be able to windsurf right now?

Depends where you live .
In Vic , only the rich.
In NSW , only the rich.
In Sydney inner suburbs its just stupid , over a mil for a dunger.

A pretty large proportion of Melbournians do live within 5Km of Port Phillip Bay, especially those interested in water sports.

But as a Queenslander you probably would not know that. So what is your interest here anyhow??

I know that comparison made with Massachusetts and I made the comment that Victorians are much more intelligent than Americans and I was banned on Facebook. Just stating the obvious.

No luck with the lifting of the 5km limit today, however THE AGE reported that outside exercise is allowed for 2 hours within 5km of home or permitted workplace and you can drive to exercise. So if for instance you work in Southbank, its possible to have an after work session at St Kilda as long as you don't go more than 400 metres out to sea
